The Trump administration's May 2025 shutdown of the VA Servicing Purchase (VASP) program, which had let struggling veterans roll missed mortgage payments into a new loan at a low fixed rate, has left thousands facing sharply higher payments. An NPR investigation found more than 15,000 veterans who got loan modifications after VASP ended saw payments rise by at least $150 a month, with over 700 facing increases of $1,000 or more — far higher rates than for conventional Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans. Industry groups had warned the VA against ending VASP without a replacement ready. A new Partial Claim Program launched over a year later, but it does not help veterans already stuck in costlier modified loans, and foreclosures on VA loans have since hit a 10-year high.

With Election Day a week away, Illinois Democrats are campaigning beyond state lines to aid party allies nationally. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi backed Texas Railroad Commissioner candidate Jon Rosenthal; Sen. Tammy Duckworth campaigned for Sherrod Brown in Ohio; Rahm Emanuel canvassed in New Hampshire; and Rep. Danny Davis and successor nominee La Shawn Ford campaigned for Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate David Crowley. Gov. JB Pritzker is focused on his own reelection, holding a large cash advantage and backing fellow Democrats financially.

Big money is also flowing into Illinois races, including Chicago school board contests, with GOP megadonors Dick and Elizabeth Uihlein and wealthy Democratic-aligned groups both spending heavily to shape outcomes from Springfield to Chicago.

The Wisconsin Elections Commission voted unanimously to prohibit the state's roughly 1,800 municipal clerks from using the federal SAVE database to verify voters' citizenship status, citing a state law restricting disclosure of voter registration data. Critics note the law includes an exemption for sharing data with law enforcement agencies. The decision follows a September Supreme Court ruling allowing the Trump administration's expanded SAVE program to continue amid litigation. The move has drawn criticism from Republican state lawmakers and election-integrity advocates, while Democratic candidates for governor and secretary of state have backed expanding benefits, including driver's licenses, to noncitizens.

The dispute could carry weight ahead of November elections, given narrow past margins in statewide Democratic primaries and estimates of tens of thousands of noncitizens residing in Wisconsin.

A little-known outlet called the Buckeye Bulletin, which presents itself as an Ohio local news source, has been running Facebook and Instagram ads promoting Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, including a controversial ad featuring opponent Amy Acton's estranged mother. The site has no bylines, staff list, or funding disclosure, but its social accounts are managed by the Lincoln Media Foundation, tied to the Orange County-based Lincoln Club, a major California conservative donor group.

Researchers say the tactic mirrors "pink-slime" sites the foundation ran in 2024 targeting swing states. The outlet mixes political attacks on Acton with local-news-style filler to appear legitimate, raising concerns about undisclosed partisan influence ahead of Ohio's closely watched governor's race.

Wisconsin election officials have reviewed and deactivated more than 500,000 voter registrations over the past year as part of routine list maintenance ahead of the Nov. 3 election. The Wisconsin Elections Commission says the cleanup targets voters who died, moved, were convicted of a felony, or were adjudicated incompetent—not active, eligible voters. Breakdown includes roughly 187,000 inactive voters who didn't respond to postcards, 142,000 who moved, nearly 130,000 flagged through the multistate ERIC system, about 31,700 deceased voters, and 2,575 felony-related removals. As of October 1, Wisconsin had about 3.6 million registered voters, with officials anticipating over 2.6 million ballots cast. The rolls have drawn conservative scrutiny since 2020, often fueled by false claims conflating active and inactive voter lists.

Rep. Tom Tiffany, the Republican candidate for Wisconsin governor, said during a debate that private election funding dubbed "Zuckerbucks" — grants from a Mark Zuckerberg-backed nonprofit that helped Wisconsin communities run elections during the pandemic — was a key reason he objected to certifying the state's 2020 results and backed Trump's bid to disqualify absentee ballots from Milwaukee and Dane counties. Democratic opponent David Crowley called the explanation inadequate, noting Tiffany alleged no actual fraud, and questioned whether Tiffany could be trusted to certify 2028 results. Tiffany pledged he would certify the 2028 election regardless of outcome. Wisconsin voters later banned private election grant funding via constitutional amendment.
