Massachusetts 7th District House Race Winner

Sen. Elizabeth Warren visited Pittsfield to promote the "21st Century Road to Housing Act," a bipartisan housing reform bill she co-sponsored with Sen. Tim Scott that became law without President Trump's signature after he demanded passage of a separate voter ID measure, the SAVE America Act, first. Warren said the housing law includes nearly 50 provisions aimed at boosting housing supply and, notably, bars private equity firms from buying up single-family homes.

Warren also addressed reports of CIA involvement in strikes on suspected drug boats near the Galapagos Islands, calling for a congressional investigation, and criticized the Pentagon's handling of conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. She framed the 2026 midterms as a check on Trump, urging Democratic turnout to guard against election interference.

The visit coincided with other Massachusetts political developments: a new poll showing Democratic primary challenger Patrick Roath narrowing the gap against Rep. Stephen Lynch in the 8th District, and a congressional inspection of an ICE detention facility in Plymouth County by Reps. Jim McGovern, Lynch and Ayanna Pressley.

Governor Maura Healey's administration is facing questions over a roughly $2 billion plan to replace Springfield's Roderick L. Ireland Courthouse with a new "regional justice center" built and owned by private developers under a 40-year lease, with two optional 10-year extensions. Under the arrangement, the state would not own the building for up to 60 years, if ever, though Healey says ownership terms are still being negotiated. Critics, including Republican gubernatorial challenger Mike Minogue and Pioneer Institute researcher Jeffrey Calabrese, question why the state would be responsible for major capital repairs in the lease's second half without gaining eventual title to the property. Healey defends the deal as the best value for taxpayers, citing the state's constrained capital budget and developer financing advantages, and dismisses criticism as political attacks and a "PR smear campaign." The bid award has also drawn controversy over developers' political ties and a pending amended legal complaint from losing bidders, which Healey predicts will be dismissed.

U.S. Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey (both D-MA) have announced they will vote against Question 8, the November ballot initiative seeking to repeal Massachusetts' regulated commercial marijuana sales and home cultivation while keeping possession and medical cannabis legal. Both senators cited strong public support and the risks of pushing consumers back to the unregulated market. Their opposition joins recent statements from Gov. Maura Healey and Rep. Ayanna Pressley, who also urged voters to reject the measure.

Multiple recent polls show the repeal effort trailing significantly, with opposition ranging from 55 to 71 percent. The state's Cannabis Control Commission reports adult-use sales have topped $10 billion since 2018, and industry advocates warn repeal could cost thousands of jobs and significant tax revenue. The measure, largely backed by Smart Approaches to Marijuana's SAM Action, has also faced legal challenges over signature-gathering tactics and ballot language, though courts and election officials have allowed it to proceed to voters.

Boston city and federal officials are pressing the U.S. Postal Service to reopen the Allston post office, closed since 2019 for structural issues, after USPS reversed earlier plans to reopen it as part of an ongoing redevelopment project. City Council President Liz Breadon noted Allston-Brighton's roughly 87,000 residents have been served by only one branch for seven years, while Mayor Michelle Wu said the city is prepared to pursue legal action if USPS does not act.

The dispute extends beyond Allston: USPS plans to close the Fields Corner branch in Dorchester on Oct. 26 over a lease expiration, and has abandoned plans to reopen Watertown Square's branch. U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley and other Massachusetts Democrats, including Sens. Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren, sent USPS leadership a letter calling the closures part of a pattern of using lease disputes as pretext to shutter branches, citing similar losses in Springfield, Shutesbury, Brockton, Medway and Mission Hill. Pressley alleged the closures reflect a broader push toward privatizing the Postal Service. Public comment on the Allston closure remains open through Oct. 11.

Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey, 80, won the Democratic primary Tuesday over U.S. Representative Seth Moulton, 47, who had campaigned on generational change. Markey, in Congress for nearly 50 years, drew support from progressive leaders including Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Elizabeth Warren, along with most of the state's congressional delegation. Moulton, a moderate Marine Corps veteran, was backed by New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill, VoteVets, and The Boston Globe's editorial board, which praised his "proven leadership." Markey held a fundraising edge of nearly $2 million and led by double digits in polling. He is heavily favored in November in a state Kamala Harris won by nearly 25 points in 2024.

A similar generational contest is unfolding in Boston's 8th District, where moderate Representative Stephen Lynch, 71, faces progressive challenger Patrick Roath, 39, who has outraised Lynch and narrowed his polling lead. Democrats hold all Massachusetts House and Senate seats, and this year's primary winners will be strongly favored in the general election.

Pennsylvania voters go to the polls on Nov. 3, 2026, in a general election that will help decide control of Congress and the state's next governor. Voter registration closed Oct. 19, and mail-in ballot requests are due by Oct. 27; polls are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day.

The marquee race pits Democratic incumbent Gov. Josh Shapiro against Republican state Treasurer Stacy Garrity, with Libertarian Ken Krawchuk also on the ballot. All Pennsylvania House seats and half the state Senate are up for election. Closely watched U.S. House contests include the 7th District, where Democrat Bob Brooks challenges Republican incumbent Ryan Mackenzie, and the 1st District, where Republican Brian Fitzpatrick faces Democrat Bob Harvie in perennially competitive Bucks County.

Liz Wills-O'Gilvie, executive director of the Springfield Food Policy Council and Gardening the Community, fasted for 19 days to protest federal changes to SNAP that have made benefits harder to access. She began eating liquid foods again this week for health reasons, citing lupus and hypoglycemia, and plans to continue with one meal a day.

The changes stem from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which added work and paperwork requirements and cut eligibility for some legal residents. In Massachusetts, about 160,000 people, including 60,000 children, have lost SNAP benefits since last year, roughly a 15% drop, even though most working-age recipients already have jobs. Wills-O'Gilvie has pushed Gov. Maura Healey for more funding to help the state's Department of Transitional Assistance manage the bureaucratic backlog. She and allied groups, including the Rural Coalition, have launched a national "stand in hunger" campaign urging people to fast for a meal or a day and call their legislators to reverse the SNAP cuts.

Federal prosecutors in Boston have indicted John Anthony Proia III, 41, of Waltham, Massachusetts, on cyberstalking charges. The indictment does not name the alleged victim, but a person familiar with the matter confirmed she is Katie Miller, a conservative podcaster married to White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller. Prosecutors allege that between August 3 and September 23, Proia used multiple phone numbers to send more than 40 calls and texts to Miller using expletives and a "menacing tone," and also sent messages to her parents describing her husband in antisemitic and inflammatory terms. The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force made the arrest, and Proia was released after an initial federal court appearance.

Attorney General Todd Blanche publicly condemned the conduct, and Katie Miller thanked him for the response. US Attorney Leah Foley said the defendant "repeatedly and relentlessly" targeted the victim and her family with "deeply disturbing communications" that "profoundly disrupted their lives." The case drew additional scrutiny after two FBI counterterrorism officials were demoted over handling of the investigation.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Maycon Souto Dos Reis, a 54-year-old Brazilian national, on Aug. 3 in Westborough, Massachusetts. Dos Reis was convicted of aggravated murder in Brazil in September 2024 and sentenced to more than 14 years in prison before fleeing the country and crossing into the United States illegally in June 2024, when he was apprehended and released under the Biden administration. He first drew ICE's attention after a May arrest for unlicensed driving in Southborough, and was later taken into custody during a targeted operation at Westborough District Court.

The arrest came two days before Gov. Maura Healey signed the PROTECT Act, which bars ICE from operating in Massachusetts courthouses, schools, childcare centers, and health care facilities, bans new 287(g) agreements, and adds legal protections for immigrant parents. ICE officials cited the case as evidence that some undocumented immigrants without U.S. criminal records have serious offenses abroad. Dos Reis remains in ICE custody pending deportation proceedings, as tensions between federal immigration authorities and Massachusetts officials continue.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has publicly defended the lone holdout juror who prevented an acquittal for Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother charged with murdering her three children. After a seven-week trial in which Clancy's defense argued she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, the jury split 11-1 in favor of a not-guilty verdict on grounds of mental disease or defect, forcing the judge to declare a mistrial. It remains unclear whether prosecutors will seek a retrial.

The identity of the holdout juror has not been officially confirmed, though other jurors described him as a Black man in his 30s. A report surfaced that he had been charged in 2021 with assaulting his then-wife, a charge later dismissed. DeSantis accused media outlets of running a smear campaign against the juror and offered him asylum in Florida if he faces harassment, framing the holdout as standing up against letting Clancy "get away with it."
