The Department of Justice has charged six Florida residents—lawful permanent residents from Cuba, Canada, Ecuador, and Brazil—with illegally voting in the 2022 and 2024 elections despite lacking U.S. citizenship. All face charges of illegal voting by an alien; three also face additional charges for falsely claiming citizenship, which carries a stiffer potential sentence. Those three could face up to five years on the citizenship charge plus one year for illegal voting, while the remaining three face a maximum of one year. Voting patterns varied, with most defendants casting ballots in both election cycles. The cases stem from an investigation by Homeland Security, the Florida Department of State, and Hernando County election officials.

A Foreign Policy essay compares Cold War-era East and West Berlin radio propaganda to contemporary U.S. media, arguing that American outlets present themselves as free of propaganda even as they omit context favorable to rival political systems. Drawing on Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky's "Manufacturing Consent" and Jason Stanley's work on propaganda, the piece contends that anti-communism functions as a long-standing ideological control mechanism in U.S. politics, shaping how Americans understand individual versus social rights.

The essay cites Gallup polling showing rising favorability toward socialism among Democrats relative to capitalism, and points to the mayoral campaign of democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani in New York City as evidence of a leftward shift provoking establishment backlash. It contrasts U.S. gaps in healthcare, sick leave, and labor protections — including the 2022 railway workers' dispute — with European social-rights frameworks, arguing that increased awareness of propaganda's role could reshape U.S. political debate over economic alternatives.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Maycon Souto Dos Reis, a 54-year-old Brazilian national, on Aug. 3 in Westborough, Massachusetts. Dos Reis was convicted of aggravated murder in Brazil in September 2024 and sentenced to more than 14 years in prison before fleeing the country and crossing into the United States illegally in June 2024, when he was apprehended and released under the Biden administration. He first drew ICE's attention after a May arrest for unlicensed driving in Southborough, and was later taken into custody during a targeted operation at Westborough District Court.

The arrest came two days before Gov. Maura Healey signed the PROTECT Act, which bars ICE from operating in Massachusetts courthouses, schools, childcare centers, and health care facilities, bans new 287(g) agreements, and adds legal protections for immigrant parents. ICE officials cited the case as evidence that some undocumented immigrants without U.S. criminal records have serious offenses abroad. Dos Reis remains in ICE custody pending deportation proceedings, as tensions between federal immigration authorities and Massachusetts officials continue.
