San Diego's City Council voted unanimously to impose a 45-day moratorium on AI data center development, pausing a proposed 400-megawatt facility at the NAVWAR site near Old Town. Manchester Financial Group, selected by the Navy in 2024 to redevelop the 70-acre property, had promised housing and mixed-use development, but emails revealed the firm explored building what could be California's largest data center. The pause, which could extend nearly a year, gives the city time to craft permanent data center regulations. Residents, some in costume, cited concerns over electricity demand, water use, and rising utility costs. The Navy is still conducting an environmental review of the site.

The USS Colorado, a Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarine, arrived at HMAS Stirling in Western Australia for a scheduled month-long maintenance period, serving as a trial run ahead of its formal assignment to the Submarine Rotational Force-West starting in late 2027. The rotation, announced jointly by US, Australian, and UK defense officials, is part of Pillar 1 of the AUKUS pact, under which the US and UK are helping Australia build a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines. More than 30 Australian technicians, backed by US Navy specialists, will perform the work. HMAS Stirling has also hosted US and Royal Navy submarines previously, underscoring expanding trilateral maintenance cooperation despite industrial-capacity concerns.

All 14 of Georgia's U.S. House seats are up for election on Nov. 3, 2026, with major-party nominees now set in every district. Most incumbents, including Sanford Bishop, Brian Jack, Hank Johnson, Nikema Williams, Lucy McBath, Rich McCormick, Austin Scott, Andrew Clyde and Rick Allen, face challengers, while District 13 features state Rep. Jasmine Clark against Air Force veteran Jonathan Chavez. Candidates include political organizers, veterans, business owners, a physician, a microbiologist and several first-time contenders.

For prediction markets, the races hinge on incumbency, district partisan lean and name recognition, with most seats considered safe for the incumbent party but a handful, such as Districts 1, 2 and 13, drawing closer scrutiny.

Tennessee's 6th Congressional District holds a Nov. 3 election to replace Rep. John Rose, who gave up the seat for an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid. Democrat Mike Croley, a Navy veteran and former federal employee, is campaigning on affordability, government accountability, congressional term limits, a ban on lawmaker stock trading, and raising the federal minimum wage. Republican Johnny Garrett, a sitting state representative and attorney endorsed by Riley Gaines, backs President Trump's agenda, stricter immigration enforcement, barring transgender athletes from women's sports, and tax cuts. Both candidates support lowering costs, gun rights, and domestic job growth. Early voting runs through Oct. 29 in the heavily Republican-leaning district.

Liberty Hill, North Charleston's oldest surviving community and a historic Black neighborhood founded in 1871, will appear before the S.C. State Board of Review on Nov. 20 as it seeks designation as a national historic district, with final approval resting on the National Park Service. The community, built by four men on 112 acres along East Montague Avenue, declined after the nearby Navy Base closed in 1996 and now faces development pressure from surrounding growth.

Alongside the federal nomination, the city has announced streetscape upgrades—improved medians, lighting, crosswalks and historic signage—funded partly through a $2.5 million council district allocation, plus plans for a future Neighborhood Conservation District to limit development size and preserve the area's character.

The U.S. Coast Guard is making steady progress on a new 64-acre base in North Charleston, South Carolina, set to become its largest home port once complete. The project, which broke ground in early 2024, includes five major capital projects: rebuilding Piers November and Mike, and constructing an administrative building, a medical and dental clinic, an engineering complex, and housing. Pier November's reconstruction finished in October, while Pier Mike is expected by 2030 under a $116 million contract. Once finished, the piers could host 10 major cutters, up from the current five vessels. Local officials say the investment, following the 1996 closure of the Charleston Naval Base, could bring significant economic benefits to the region.

President Donald Trump held a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, urging supporters to back Republican U.S. Senate candidate Jon Husted against Democrat Sherrod Brown and gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy against Democrat Amy Acton ahead of the November midterms. Speaking at the Covelli Centre, Trump framed the races as a choice to "Put Ohio First" and asked attendees to treat the contests as if he were personally on the ballot. He also announced federal assistance for SOBE Thermal Energy Systems and disclosed that Cleveland will host a new 46,000-square-foot U.S. Navy submarine component repair facility, crediting Husted with securing the project. Jon Gruden introduced Trump, with boxer Jake Paul also appearing.

A new co/efficient poll of 925 likely Ohio voters, taken Oct. 5-6, found both races within the margin of error: Ramaswamy led Acton 45%-43% in the governor's race, while Husted led Brown 44%-43% in the Senate contest, a special election to fill the seat J.D. Vance vacated. Analysts continue to rate both races as toss-ups.
