Mehmet Oz

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, FBI Director Kash Patel, CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz and FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson held a news conference in St. Cloud, Minnesota, branding the state "ground zero" for fraud. Officials touted the administration's "War on Fraud" agenda, including a new whistleblower incentive program offering up to $30,000 for tips leading to convictions. They highlighted recent FBI raids in Minneapolis tied to a 26-indictment Medicare fraud probe and criticized Gov. Tim Walz's administration for lax oversight, citing the shuttered housing stabilization services program. The event followed a Senate Democrats' report alleging CMS targeted blue states in fraud enforcement, which Bessent disputed.

CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said fraudsters in Minnesota paid mothers roughly $1,500 per child to falsely claim their children were autistic, a scheme he said harmed both the children misdiagnosed and families genuinely needing services. Speaking alongside President Trump and Vice President Vance, Oz said CMS reviewed providers in the state's 14 high-risk programs and found about a third could not be validated, prompting dozens of cases, including criminal investigations, and roughly $500 million in deferred payments. The findings follow reporting by independent journalist Nick Shirley and come after Oz gave Gov. Tim Walz a 60-day ultimatum to fix the program. Walz has called the federal scrutiny political retribution against Minnesota.

Utah's Department of Health and Human Services is disputing claims from CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz that the state showed zero overpayments recovered in Medicaid managed care. Utah officials say CMS federal reporting systems failed to accurately reflect data the state had submitted, which included 133 fraud referrals drawn from nearly 200 cases investigated by managed care plans.

Oz had singled out Utah along with Arizona, California, Iowa, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, questioning how states serving millions of Medicaid beneficiaries could report no recovered overpayments. He gave the states 30 days to verify their numbers, warning the pattern could reflect a data error or a deeper oversight failure. Utah says it will comply with the review and work with CMS to clarify its reporting, while noting it already partners with the Office of Inspector General and the state Attorney General's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit to pursue fraud cases.

The dispute comes as broader Medicaid eligibility changes under H.R. 1 begin phasing out coverage for several immigrant categories.

Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden is running for reelection in Wisconsin's 3rd Congressional District by embracing President Trump rather than distancing himself, betting that energizing the conservative base outweighs risks from Trump's sagging approval ratings, the Iran war, and economic worries. He faces a rematch with Democrat Rebecca Cooke, whom he beat by less than 3 points in 2022. The historically bellwether district, carried by both Obama and Trump in past elections, is a top Democratic pickup target this cycle.

Van Orden has voted with Trump nearly 100% of the time, hosted top administration officials in his district, and drawn Elon Musk-linked PAC spending on his behalf. Cooke, backed by both moderate and progressive Democrats including Bernie Sanders, argues Van Orden's close alignment with an unpopular president is a liability, while Van Orden has also faced criticism for AI-generated videos attacking Cooke. Both candidates are courting independents and frustrated voters as the race is seen as pivotal to control of the House.

Dallas is drawing renewed national political attention, a shift Bloomberg describes as the city's return to prominence after roughly four decades away from the center of the action. The city's growing role reflects Texas's broader rise as a political and economic force, fueled by its energy sector, expanding finance and tech presence, and its weight in national Republican politics.

Coverage tied to this trend touches on figures including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, alongside broader themes like the 2026 midterm elections, the state's business climate, and its increasing pull for corporate relocations and investment. The renewed focus underscores Texas's outsized influence on national policy debates spanning energy, finance, and technology, and signals why political observers and markets are watching the state's institutions and leaders more closely heading into upcoming election cycles.

California is assessing whether state funds can cover a gap left after the Trump administration, through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services under Mehmet Oz, moved to restrict federal Medicaid funding for gender-affirming care. Medi-Cal data show youth patients filed about $1 million in claims for hormone therapy and puberty blockers in 2025, plus $6.4 million for related services like counseling and doctor visits. Gender-affirming surgeries for minors remain rare.

The new federal rule, effective October 13, targets puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and surgeries, but leaves mental health services reimbursable and allows states to fund the restricted care themselves. California has set aside a $30 million fund for gender-affirming care and abortion services and a $26 million trans healthcare trust fund, which state health officials expect to cover Medi-Cal needs for three years. Trans youth services represent a tiny fraction of Medi-Cal's roughly $200 billion budget.

Advocates and the state's LGBTQ Legislative Caucus warn of future funding pressure, while Attorney General Rob Bonta's office says it is reviewing the rule but has not announced litigation.
