Dearborn, Michigan Mayor Abdullah Hammoud plans to spend up to $50,000 to top off the city's municipal fuel reserves, citing concerns that renewed conflict with Iran could disrupt fuel supplies or drive up prices. Hammoud said the decision followed reports of U.S. military bases stockpiling supplies and emergency preparations abroad. The city operates its own fueling stations and aims to have reserves filled within a week, ensuring police cars, fire trucks, ambulances and public works vehicles keep running through winter. Hammoud called it a precaution, not a response to a confirmed shortage, while noting the funds otherwise could have gone toward local infrastructure projects.

The USS Colorado, a Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarine, arrived at HMAS Stirling in Western Australia for a scheduled month-long maintenance period, serving as a trial run ahead of its formal assignment to the Submarine Rotational Force-West starting in late 2027. The rotation, announced jointly by US, Australian, and UK defense officials, is part of Pillar 1 of the AUKUS pact, under which the US and UK are helping Australia build a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines. More than 30 Australian technicians, backed by US Navy specialists, will perform the work. HMAS Stirling has also hosted US and Royal Navy submarines previously, underscoring expanding trilateral maintenance cooperation despite industrial-capacity concerns.

Virginia voters will decide Nov. 3 whether to amend the state constitution to remove its existing ban on same-sex marriage and replace it with language affirming marriage equality. The proposed amendment also references "sex" and "gender," language that opponents say extends protections tied to gender identity. If approved, Virginia would become the fifth state to repeal a constitutional same-sex marriage ban through a ballot measure.

The measure has drawn sharp debate, with supporters framing it as codifying marriage equality and critics raising concerns about privacy, safety and religious liberty tied to gender-identity provisions. The vote is being watched as part of a broader pattern of states revisiting dormant constitutional bans following federal recognition of same-sex marriage.

South Carolina schools Superintendent Ellen Weaver is running for reelection, facing Democrat Sylvia Wright in a race that is competitive in fundraising but has favored Republicans since 2011. Weaver touts gains in reading and math, a push for school safety, and expanded career pathways, while defending the state's three-year-old voucher program that provides over $7,600 per student for private school or homeschool expenses. Critics, including Wright, say the program lacks accountability and mostly benefits families who could already afford private schooling; a recent cyberattack froze vendor payments. Weaver's tenure has also drawn controversy over book bans, cutting AP African American Studies, and aligning with conservative groups like PragerU amid broader public-school enrollment decline.

A federal magistrate judge in Miami ruled that President Trump must sit for a deposition with BBC lawyers by Dec. 11 or risk penalties, including possible dismissal of his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the broadcaster. Trump had skipped a scheduled Oct. 16 deposition, citing other commitments, and proposed mid-January instead; BBC lawyers argued the delay was untenable given his central role in the case.

The suit stems from a 2024 BBC documentary that spliced portions of Trump's Jan. 6, 2021 speech, which he claims misrepresented his remarks and amounted to election interference. The BBC has apologized for the edit but disputes any defamation. The hearing also addressed a BBC subpoena seeking testimony from former special counsel Jack Smith, which Trump's lawyers oppose. Discovery is scheduled to close Dec. 18.

Pope Leo XIV, recovering from lung nodule surgery at Gemelli hospital, has broken with Vatican tradition by having his doctors—not Vatican officials—issue daily medical bulletins on his condition. The approach contrasts sharply with past papacies: John Paul II's health crises were obscured by misleading Vatican statements, while Pope Francis largely refused medical advice and governed health matters alone. Observers describe Leo's reliance on expert transparency as reflecting American-style corporate governance norms, consistent with his inclusive rollout of an AI encyclical earlier this year. Even while hospitalized, Leo has continued diplomatic work, including a call with Vladimir Putin on humanitarian relief in Ukraine, amid speculation within the Vatican over Cardinal Pietro Parolin's influence and the pontificate's direction during his recovery.

A Broomfield, Colorado middle schooler, Peter Daniell, won the 2026 National Civics Bee Championship in Washington, D.C., besting 51 other finalists in a buzzer-round competition testing knowledge of the Constitution, civic challenges and American government. The national competition began with roughly 20,000 students from 240 communities before narrowing to the 52 finalists who competed across multiple rounds of knowledge, critical thinking and problem-solving challenges.

Daniell clinched the title by correctly identifying the Whiskey Rebellion as the name given to farmers' resistance to a federal tax on distilled spirits during George Washington's presidency. Colorado Governor Jared Polis congratulated Daniell, calling the win a testament to his hard work and to the state's commitment to education. As champion, Daniell receives a $100,000 contribution toward a 529 educational savings plan.

Connecticut's congressional Democrats are previewing the influence they could wield if the party retakes the House and, less likely, the Senate in the midterms. Rep. Rosa DeLauro could return as Appropriations chair, overseeing spending fights with the Trump administration's Office of Management and Budget over rescissions and impoundment. Rep. Jim Himes, in line for House Intelligence chair, plans oversight of contractors, universities, and firms accommodating Trump's demands. Rep. Joe Courtney, on Seapower, would scrutinize submarine programs, the AUKUS agreement, and Air Force One's provenance. Rep. Jahana Hayes is pursuing the top Democratic slot on Education and the Workforce against incumbent Bobby Scott and Suzanne Bonamici, though she says her focus remains on her competitive reelection race first.

Retaking the Senate is seen as harder, requiring a four-seat net gain; Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy could reclaim subcommittee leadership roles. Democrats acknowledge lingering voter distrust after 2024 and say they must quickly address affordability alongside oversight of Trump if given the majority. Connecticut's delegation also faces its own reelection battles, with John Larson already having lost his primary.
