Paterson's Board of Education election features three seats and seven candidates following a contentious year marked by the elimination of four choice elementary schools, an 8% tax hike paired with layoffs and job cuts, a plan to split the district's top-ranked gifted and talented program across two buildings, and a last-minute vote to extend Superintendent Laurie Newell's contract scheduled for the night before the election.

Incumbents Joel Ramirez and Mohammed Rashid, backed by Mayor Andre Sayegh and other local officials, have supported the superintendent's decisions, while incumbent Kenneth Simmons and challengers Chris Small and Banita Herndon have opposed them, citing a lack of transparency and academic concerns. Other candidates include Madelen Lemoine and Sumaidah Ramadan.

Chief Judge John McConnell granted summary judgment for Providence City Councilman Miguel Sanchez, ruling that Gov. Dan McKee's top aides, Chief of Staff Antonio Afonso and Deputy Chief of Staff Joseph Almond, violated Sanchez's First Amendment rights by firing him from a constituent-services role in 2023 over social media posts criticizing Israel's actions in Gaza and calling for a ceasefire. McConnell found Sanchez spoke as a private citizen, his firing drew far more public and media attention than the posts themselves, and other staffers who posted dissenting views were not disciplined. McKee's office disagrees with the ruling and is reviewing its options; a trial on damages remains ahead. Sanchez, soon to be City Council president, called it a free speech victory.

San Diego's City Council voted unanimously to impose a 45-day moratorium on AI data center development, pausing a proposed 400-megawatt facility at the NAVWAR site near Old Town. Manchester Financial Group, selected by the Navy in 2024 to redevelop the 70-acre property, had promised housing and mixed-use development, but emails revealed the firm explored building what could be California's largest data center. The pause, which could extend nearly a year, gives the city time to craft permanent data center regulations. Residents, some in costume, cited concerns over electricity demand, water use, and rising utility costs. The Navy is still conducting an environmental review of the site.

Chicago Police Department leaders faced sharp questioning from City Council members during a budget hearing over Mayor Brandon Johnson's newly announced gunshot detection pilot program. Interim Superintendent Fred Waller and other CPD officials said they had few details, telling alderpersons the city's Department of Procurement and Public Safety is leading the rollout, with CPD's role limited to helping select six pilot districts. Alderpersons including Matt O'Shea and Jason Ervin criticized the lack of transparency and unclear deployment timeline. The program follows the 2022 cancellation of ShotSpotter and a recent bid process for a replacement system. City officials expect to share implementation details in early November, with the six-month pilot planned for districts 2, 5, 7, 9, 10 and 11.

Evanston's City Council appointed 4th Ward Ald. Jonathan Nieuwsma as acting mayor following Daniel Biss' resignation, as Biss is heavily favored to win Illinois' 9th Congressional District seat in the Nov. 3 election. Council members chose Nieuwsma in a 5-4 vote that followed several failed attempts to nominate other aldermen, most of whom declined consideration. Nieuwsma, who has served as alderman since 2021, is not among the six candidates running in the Feb. 23 mayoral primary and plans to remain 4th Ward alderman after that race concludes. He will serve as acting mayor until April 2027, when voters elect someone to complete Biss' term, which runs through May 2029.

A Minneapolis City Council committee voted 9-3 to advance a proposal disbanding the Office of Community Safety (OCS), created by Mayor Jacob Frey in 2022 after voters rejected replacing the police department with a new public safety agency. A full council vote could come as soon as Thursday. Supporters, including Council President Elliott Payne, say the office muddled the chain of command between the mayor and police chief; critics call the move reckless and warn it would boost MPD's influence while sidelining alternative response programs. Eliminating the commissioner role would save about $2 million amid a budget crunch, though OCS initiatives like unarmed mental-health crisis response would continue under the mayor's office.
