Immigration and Customs Enforcement is searching for Alpha Bah, a Guinean national whom New York City officials released from custody despite an ICE detainer. Bah was arrested October 7 on charges including aggravated assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest, but Queens Central Booking released him without notifying ICE, per DHS. He had two prior arrests, in 2025 and 2026, after which NYPD similarly declined to honor detainers.

DHS says New York failed to honor more than 16,000 ICE detainers since January 2025, tied to over 52,000 criminal charges and convictions, intensifying the national debate over sanctuary city policies and immigration enforcement.

An NRCC ad targeting Jamie Ager, the Democratic candidate in North Carolina's 11th District, highlights a past "kid-friendly" farm festival where drag performers from the Beer City Sisters, including figures using names like "Sister Domina Trix," appeared. Ager's Hickory Nut Gap Farm had publicly thanked the group for attending the 2019 event before later locking the related Facebook post.

Performers and LGBTQ advocates, including Blue Ridge Pride, disputed the ad, with some performers claiming parts of the footage were AI-generated and issuing cease-and-desist demands. The NRCC stands by the ad. The dispute has become a flashpoint in the closely watched race days before the election.

A House Judiciary Committee report examines immigration-related practices in New York City district attorney offices. It cites a 2019 Bronx guide on "immigration-conscious plea bargaining" that reportedly advised prosecutors in child sex crime cases to offer pleas to offenses that excluded the child's age as an element, and to keep domestic relationships out of conviction records in abuse cases. In Queens, DA Melinda Katz's office said it modified or vacated convictions for 21 defendants in her first year to avoid unanticipated immigration consequences. The report also notes NYPD has not honored any of nearly 10,000 ICE detainer requests over the past year, and cites a prior ICE review finding dozens of released individuals later rearrested.

A New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct censure detailed how Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge Jeffrey Gershuny pulled out his personal firearm during an Aug. 5, 2025 suppression hearing to test whether a testifying NYPD officer could distinguish a gun from other objects inside a bag. After questioning from both sides left him unsatisfied with the officer's account of detecting a bulge, Gershuny retrieved a stapler from his chambers, removed his 9-mm handgun from its holster, unloaded it, and placed it on the floor while putting the stapler in a shopping bag instead—proceeding over prosecutors' objections and against his own court officers' advice.

The officer described sensing an L-shaped object consistent with a firearm; Gershuny then revealed the stapler, suppressed the gun evidence in the underlying case, and accused the officer of fabricating his account. The Brooklyn DA later declined to prosecute and the case was dismissed. Gershuny, who has no prior disciplinary history, cooperated with the investigation, agreed to the censure, and no longer carries his weapon into court.

New York City held its 82nd annual Columbus Day Parade on Fifth Avenue, drawing tens of thousands of participants and an estimated one million spectators to celebrate Italian American heritage and mark the anniversary of Christopher Columbus' 1492 arrival in the Americas. Several stretches of Fifth Avenue and side streets were closed for the event.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a longtime critic of Columbus, did not attend and skipped three related events over the weekend. Andre Dimino, president of the Italian American One Voice Coalition, criticized the snub, recalling Mamdani's 2020 campaign to remove a Columbus statue in Astoria while posting a photo of an obscene gesture toward it. Dimino argued Italian Americans are being disrespected by a mayor in such a prominent position. Mamdani has reportedly said he will host a separate Italian American heritage month reception at Gracie Mansion at a later date.

New York City's Department of Homeless Services has withdrawn from the VA's Grant and Per Diem program, which has funded transitional housing for more than 200 veterans at the Borden Avenue Veterans Residence in Long Island City for nearly two decades. The withdrawal took effect Oct. 1, at the start of a new federal fiscal year and grant cycle, creating uncertainty over continued federal support for the shelter.

The city and the VA offer conflicting accounts of what happened. DHS says the VA offered only about 30% of its previous funding and attached conditions tied to Trump administration executive orders that it claims would have required discriminating against transgender veterans. The VA disputes that characterization as false, saying it could not justify a larger award after evaluating the facility, which has faced longstanding complaints over overcrowding, violence and mismanagement, some now part of a federal lawsuit against the city and its nonprofit operator. DHS says services remain uninterrupted under the city's right-to-shelter mandate, but how lost transitional funding and support services will be replaced remains unresolved.

New York City residents are reporting an unusual shortage of Diet Coke across grocery delivery services and retailers, with customers on Amazon Fresh, FreshDirect, Costco and Target describing empty shelves and unfulfilled online orders for weeks. Shoppers from the Upper East Side to Brooklyn, Harlem, Queens and Long Island have swapped stories online, with some only half-jokingly declaring a household "emergency" over the missing soda.

The cause remains unclear. Some Amazon Fresh customers suspect a business dispute, such as a contract or invoice issue with Coca-Cola, rather than an actual product shortage, and one commenter claiming to work at an Amazon Fresh warehouse said Pepsi products were still arriving while Coca-Cola's were not. Coca-Cola, Amazon and FreshDirect have not commented. The episode echoes a genuine Diet Coke shortage in India this year, where aluminum can supplies were disrupted by Strait of Hormuz shipping issues tied to the U.S.-Iran conflict, though no link to New York's situation has been confirmed. Diet Coke remains one of Coca-Cola's billion-dollar brands, with global volumes up this year.
