Civil rights leader and labor organizer Dolores Huerta died Wednesday at age 96. Co-founder of the United Farm Workers union, Huerta coined the rallying cry "Sí, se puede!" during a 1972 Phoenix protest against an anti-labor law and spent decades advocating for farmworkers, women, and civil rights, including later campaigns against SB1070 and for the Equal Rights Amendment.

Arizona officials across parties and government, including Gov. Katie Hobbs, Sens. Ruben Gallego and Mark Kelly, Reps. Yassamin Ansari, Greg Stanton and Adelita Grijalva, Attorney General Kris Mayes, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, and Councilmember Betty Guardado, praised her lasting influence on the state and nation. A candlelight vigil was held outside Phoenix City Hall in her honor.

New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez has sued Jeffrey Epstein's longtime attorney Darren Indyke and accountant Richard Kahn, accusing them of concealing Epstein's sex trafficking operation at his Zorro Ranch near Santa Fe. The suit seeks to block the pair from receiving payments from Epstein's estate, valued at more than $100 million, arguing those funds should instead go to survivors. Torrez said the abuse "could [not] be done by just one man" and was facilitated by handlers, lawyers and accountants who have faced no real consequences.

Indyke and Kahn have told Congress they were unaware of the abuse, a claim Torrez disputes. Witnesses at Ghislaine Maxwell's trial alleged abuse occurred at the ranch, which Epstein bought in 1993 and later sold to the family of Texas Comptroller Don Huffines; probate proceedings continue in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

New Mexico has filed a lawsuit against Jeffrey Epstein's longtime attorney and accountant, accusing them of knowingly concealing his sex trafficking operation and enabling abuse to continue for years. The suit alleges the two professionals provided legal and financial services that helped shield Epstein's activities from scrutiny, despite warning signs. New Mexico officials argue the pair bear responsibility for facilitating harm to victims by failing to report or act on suspicious conduct. The case adds to the broader legal fallout from Epstein's case, which continues to produce new litigation against associates accused of enabling his crimes, as survivors and state authorities pursue accountability beyond Epstein himself.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed it issued a waiver on Oct. 2 suspending New Mexico's Water Code to secure groundwater for border wall construction, fueling an ongoing dispute between the state and federal government. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin's directive, published in the Federal Register, cited the El Paso Sector's status as an "area of high illegal entry" to justify bypassing state water protections for road building, concrete production, and dust suppression.

New Mexico officials, including state engineer's office counsel Nathaniel Chakeres, called the move unconstitutional, arguing the state's water belongs to the public under its constitution. Officials say Customs and Border Protection has continued pumping from unpermitted wells despite agreeing to pause new drilling, and described unsafe well conditions risking groundwater contamination. The conflict follows months of tension, including a land dispute with a Catholic diocese, farmer complaints over aquifer depletion, and an August lawsuit by the state against the federal government and its contractors over unauthorized drilling near the border.

A Kansas Senate race that few expected to be competitive has tightened into a dead heat, with recent polling showing Republican incumbent Roger Marshall running even with Democrat Adam Hamilton, a megachurch pastor who was a registered Republican until earlier this year. Hamilton leads the Church of the Resurrection, a United Methodist congregation with 24,000 members, and has drawn national attention for a campaign style built around his pastoral background. Outside spending is surging into the race, with Senate Democrats' top super PAC committing $5 million and Republicans pledging $14 million to defend the seat.

The Kansas contest comes amid a broader wave of competitive Senate battlegrounds, including Georgia, Michigan, Maine, Texas, South Carolina, and Iowa, where recent debates turned personal and nonpartisan analysts have shifted ratings on 18 House races in Democrats' favor. For prediction markets, the race underscores growing uncertainty over Senate control in 2026, with a historically safe Republican seat now drawing heavy spending and shifting odds as Hamilton's unconventional candidacy gains traction in a state that has not elected a Democratic senator since 1932.

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed to review whether immigrants already living in the United States are entitled to a bond hearing before being detained indefinitely, a case with direct implications for Leonel Bolivar Linares, a 29-year-old Venezuelan former custodian for the St. Johns County School District in Florida. ICE detained him near St. Johns Parkway on Aug. 6, and he has since been held for roughly six weeks, moved from Baker County to El Paso, Texas, and now New Mexico.

Court records show Bolivar Linares entered the U.S. legally in 2023 with federal parole, later received Temporary Protected Status under Venezuela's designation, and had a pending asylum application with approved work authorization through 2027. His TPS ended when the Trump administration terminated Venezuela's designation in October 2025. His attorney filed a petition arguing he is entitled to a bond hearing. Federal appeals courts have split on the underlying legal question, prompting Supreme Court review. Arguments are expected in coming months, with the ruling likely to affect detention policy for many immigrants nationwide.
