New Mexico Governor Election: Who Will Win in 2026?

President Donald Trump floated renaming New Mexico "New America" during his speech at the GOP's midterm convention in Dallas. Leticia Munoz, executive director of the Republican Party of New Mexico, brushed off the idea, saying the state needs "a new governor, not so much a new name," and characterized the suggestion as "parody" consistent with Trump's history of trolling critics.

Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham rejected the proposal earlier in the week, stating "New Mexico's name isn't up for debate — it's been ours since before the United States existed," and accused Trump of using the distraction to deflect from issues like gas prices, grocery costs, and health care access.

Trump has previously renamed Lake Ontario to "Lake America" and the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America." However, changing a state's name would face greater legal obstacles, as New Mexico's name is enshrined in its state constitution, making any such change far more complicated than renaming a body of water.

Incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Ben Ray Luján will face Republican Larry Marker on the Nov. 3 general election ballot for New Mexico's U.S. Senate seat, a six-year term paying $174,000 annually. Luján won his primary decisively, while the state Republican Party failed to field an official candidate, prompting Marker, a Roswell oil and gas businessman, to mount a write-in campaign that drew nearly as many votes as Luján's primary opponent.

Luján, in office since 2020 and a veteran of New Mexico politics, cites the cost of living and water access as top priorities, touts legislation like the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act, and has criticized Trump administration policies on tariffs, Medicaid and immigration enforcement. Marker, making his first bid for statewide office after previous unsuccessful runs, is focused on stabilizing Social Security, reducing federal debt, and supporting oil, gas and ranching industries, while expressing measured support for Trump's agenda. Republicans haven't won statewide in New Mexico in a decade, but Marker points to shifting voter registration trends as reason for optimism.

Louisiana's Public Service Commission voted 4-1 to require investor-owned utilities Entergy, Cleco Power and Southwestern Electric Power Company to participate in a new "Louisiana Advanced Nuclear Exploration" program, studying how to integrate nuclear energy into their systems. Utilities can spend up to $2 million over three years on feasibility and economic studies, partnering with nuclear firms. Commissioners removed a proposed per-meter customer fee, instead allowing cost recovery through base rates without rate increases unless separately approved. Commissioner Davante Lewis cast the dissenting vote, warning ratepayers could fund research without guaranteed benefits. The move follows Gov. Jeff Landry's push for nuclear investment and aligns with the Trump administration's emphasis on expanding nuclear energy amid rising data center and industrial power demand.

U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) has sent Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont a letter demanding an apology after a 29-year-old Ohio man, Austin J. Karr Grimes, was killed in an August 29 crash in Fulton County, Ohio. Authorities say Washington G. Naula Ochoa, 34, who held a Connecticut "drive-only" license issued to people who cannot prove legal status, ran a stop sign and struck Grimes' SUV, which overturned. Two passengers, a woman and a child, suffered minor injuries. Naula Ochoa has been charged with vehicular homicide.

Moreno's letter blames Connecticut's licensing policy for the death and gives Lamont five days to disclose how many drive-only licenses have been issued, how many holders have committed crimes or registered to vote, and the program's cost. Lamont responded with condolences but defended the policy, saying it improves road safety and insurance rates. Connecticut is among 19 states plus Washington, D.C., that license drivers without legal status; research on crash risk from such laws is mixed, with studies reaching differing conclusions on fatality rates.

New Mexico has filed a lawsuit against Jeffrey Epstein's longtime attorney and accountant, accusing them of knowingly concealing his sex trafficking operation and enabling abuse to continue for years. The suit alleges the two professionals provided legal and financial services that helped shield Epstein's activities from scrutiny, despite warning signs. New Mexico officials argue the pair bear responsibility for facilitating harm to victims by failing to report or act on suspicious conduct. The case adds to the broader legal fallout from Epstein's case, which continues to produce new litigation against associates accused of enabling his crimes, as survivors and state authorities pursue accountability beyond Epstein himself.

Sheryl Williams Stapleton, a former New Mexico House majority leader and Albuquerque Public Schools administrator, pleaded guilty to state fraud and money laundering charges, three weeks after a federal jury convicted her of dozens of similar charges in a related case. State prosecutors had charged her with money laundering, racketeering and other counts in 2021, ahead of an October trial. Under the plea deal, all but four charges were dropped, with an agreed 10.5-year prison sentence and more than $1.8 million in restitution. A New Mexico Department of Justice spokesperson said the plea holds Stapleton accountable for defrauding taxpayers, and noted the federal sentence will exceed what the state system alone could impose.

Prosecutors say Stapleton, as the district's career and technical education director, steered more than $3 million in federal vocational education funds to Robotics Management Learning Systems LLC, a Washington, D.C.-based company owned by her friend and federal co-defendant Joseph Johnson, by pushing its invoices through procurement while he supplied blank checks to her. She resigned from the legislature and was fired by the district after a 2021 search of her home. Both she and Johnson, also convicted federally, have yet to be sentenced and have signaled plans to appeal.

The U.S. Department of Justice has sued Arizona, Oregon, Washington and New Mexico over state laws granting in-state college tuition to immigrants without legal status, bringing the total number of states sued over such policies to 21. In Arizona, the challenged law is Proposition 308, a 2022 voter-approved measure allowing immigrants without legal status who attended an Arizona high school for at least two years to qualify for in-state rates. Oregon's 2013 Tuition Equity Act, which also covers veterans and lawful permanent residents, is likewise targeted, along with comparable statutes in Washington and New Mexico. The DOJ argues the policies violate a 1996 federal law by extending tuition benefits to immigrants without legal status that aren't equally available to out-of-state U.S. citizens.

The Arizona complaint cites estimates of over 3,600 immigrants without legal status potentially qualifying annually, with at least 720 already receiving in-state rates in fall 2025; in Oregon, an estimated 4,730 of 215,019 higher-education students are undocumented, with over 1,000 benefiting from the tuition program in 2023-24. The DOJ seeks court orders blocking enforcement. Federal courts have already struck down comparable laws in Texas, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Illinois, with a dozen more states, including California and New York, facing pending litigation; a Minnesota case was dismissed and is under appeal. Oregon and Washington officials have vowed to defend their laws; Arizona has not yet responded.

New Mexico Acting Gov. Howie Morales declared a state of emergency on Sept. 30 as flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Polo damaged infrastructure, cut off transportation routes, and threatened homes across the state. Morales signed five executive orders, each releasing $750,000 in immediate assistance, putting up to $3.75 million toward response and recovery through the state's Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. Funds can cover temporary lodging, shelter, healthcare, food, and transportation, and the National Guard may be deployed if local authorities need help.

Parts of the state are under evacuation orders. In Doña Ana County, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning after officials warned McLeod Dam was at risk of imminent failure, raising fears of life-threatening flooding downstream. The Hatch Valley Public School District closed schools due to impassable roads, and Ruidoso issued a voluntary evacuation notice over landslide risk. More rain is forecast.
