Gretchen Whitmer

A new Detroit News/WDIV poll of likely Michigan voters finds President Trump's job approval largely unchanged since late summer, with about 59% disapproving versus 39% approving—among the weakest pre-midterm numbers for a president in recent history, comparable to George W. Bush in 2006. Disapproval is even steeper on Trump's handling of the Iran War and U.S.-Canada relations. Pollster Richard Czuba says Trump's approval has become the central dividing line in Michigan's 2026 races, including the competitive U.S. Senate contest between Republican Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, where Rogers currently trails. Analysts say the dynamic echoes the 2022 midterms, when abortion politics drove Democratic wins statewide.

Michigan voters head to the polls Nov. 3, with early voting running through Nov. 1. Top of the ballot: an open U.S. Senate seat pitting Democrat Abdul El-Sayed against Republican Mike Rogers, and a governor's race to succeed term-limited Gretchen Whitmer, featuring Democrat Jocelyn Benson against Republican John James. Down-ballot contests include attorney general (Eli Savit vs. Doug Lloyd) and secretary of state (Garlin Gilchrist II vs. Anthony Forlini), plus two statewide proposals — one on calling a constitutional convention, another limiting corporate political contributions.

Detroit voters also pick five school board members, and Wayne and Oakland counties weigh a museum funding millage.

Jackson County District Judge Nicole Hughes, appointed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in April, faces scrutiny over her ties to County Prosecutor Kelsey Guernsey, who has endorsed her, appeared at campaign events, and door-knocked on her behalf. Fellow Judge Robert Gaecke, who backs Hughes' opponent George Lyons, publicly criticized the arrangement as creating an "appearance of impropriety." Hughes and Guernsey deny wrongdoing, calling the criticism a campaign tactic, and Chief District Judge Daniel Goostrey backed Hughes' conduct. Legal ethics experts are split: some say a prosecutor campaigning for a judge who hears that office's cases raises serious neutrality concerns, while others see no formal violation of Michigan's judicial conduct canons.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer joined Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed at a Grand Rapids campaign stop, pitching him as someone who will "stand up for Michigan" while casting Republican opponent Mike Rogers as likely to "fold for Donald Trump." The appearance marked a rare joint event given the two Democrats' rocky history, including a 2018 gubernatorial primary against each other and Whitmer's earlier endorsement of El-Sayed's primary rival.

The tightening race, which could help decide Senate control, later turned contentious during a televised Grand Rapids debate. Rogers accused El-Sayed of failing to acknowledge the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on its anniversary, calling it grounds for voter anger; El-Sayed said he had condemned the attack and accused Rogers of exploiting it as "political theater," a label Rogers then turned back on El-Sayed's campaign generally, including his use of a "doctor" title. El-Sayed has also faced attacks on his name and faith, including a Trump social media post calling him "Mohammed" and a "terrorist sympathizer," which he dismissed as distractions from economic issues like gas and grocery prices.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D) and Rep. John James (R-Mich.) met Tuesday night in their first general-election debate for governor, hosted by Nexstar's WOOD-TV. The two are vying to succeed term-limited Gov. Gretchen Whitmer as Republicans try to flip the seat in November.

Cook Political Report currently rates the race as leaning Democratic, and prediction-market averages give Benson roughly a three-in-four chance of winning, with James trailing. The debate marks an early test of how each candidate's messaging resonates with voters as the campaign heads toward Election Day, and it is likely to shape perceptions of the race's competitiveness ahead of further polling and market movement.

Michigan voters will choose between Democrat Jocelyn Benson, the secretary of state, and Republican John James, a U.S. House member, in the Nov. 3 gubernatorial election, with a televised debate set for Oct. 6. The two candidates diverge sharply across a wide range of policy areas, including health care, housing, energy costs, taxes and utility regulation. Benson has pledged an electricity cost freeze, a Prescription Drug Affordability Board and expanded housing tax credits, while James favors deregulation, increased utility competition and sweeping income tax cuts paired with a government spending audit.

The candidates also split on right-to-work repeal, Line 5 pipeline construction, tariffs on Canada, and their relationships with President Trump, who has endorsed James. On the 2020 election, Benson defends Michigan's results as secure while James has suggested he was "screwed" in his own Senate loss that year. Other flashpoints include transgender athletes in girls sports, abortion rights, data center moratoriums, gun policy, Flock camera regulations and expanding the state's Freedom of Information Act. If elected, Benson would extend Democratic control of the governorship, while James would become Michigan's first Black governor.
