Wayne County Executive Warren Evans said at a Detroit Regional Chamber event that he isn't opposed to data centers broadly, but objects to deals he sees as lopsided, where companies receive large tax incentives while offering communities comparatively little in return. Evans recently vetoed tax incentives and a community benefits agreement for a proposed Google data center in Van Buren Township, citing a rushed process; county commissioners later overrode his veto.

Oakland County's Dave Coulter and Macomb County's Mark Hackel, appearing alongside Evans, said developers have failed to clearly communicate community benefits and often require nondisclosure agreements that limit public input. Coulter also warned of a potential saturation point leaving communities with vacant facilities. Clinton Township recently enacted a temporary moratorium on new data centers.

The Rochester Hills City Council unanimously approved a three-year, $183,000 contract with Flock Safety, despite vocal opposition from nearly 50 residents at the meeting. Councilmember Marvie Neubauer's amendment shifted oversight to the public safety and infrastructure technical review committee, requiring quarterly reviews of data usage. Supporters, including Oakland County Sheriff's Capt. Paul Workman, cited the cameras' role in solving two homicides and locating missing people, and noted deputies' searches are limited to template-based queries.

Critics raised Fourth Amendment concerns, data-sharing risks with ICE, and a pending investigation into a former deputy accused of leaking Flock data to immigration officials. The city currently operates 17 of a possible 20 Flock cameras. Elsewhere, scrutiny of Flock contracts continues: Fort Wayne and Bloomington, Indiana, have dropped the vendor, and Indianapolis is weighing a surveillance-regulation ordinance alongside debate over whether to cancel its own Flock contract.

Jalal Abdallah, a Dearborn attorney and Democratic candidate for Michigan's 15th House District, testified at an Attorney Discipline Board hearing that he failed to fully pay settlement funds owed to clients, including one case where a client was shorted $127,000 of a $147,000 payout. Abdallah said the money instead sat in his business account, blaming his brother, a former office manager, for mishandling distributions, while acknowledging ultimate responsibility. Clients were repaid only after the Attorney Grievance Commission subpoenaed records involving roughly 30 affected clients. A discipline hearing could follow if misconduct is found. Abdallah faces Republican Hassan Nehme in the Nov. 2 general election for the seat covering Dearborn Heights and west Dearborn.

Michigan voters head to the polls Nov. 3, with early voting running through Nov. 1. Top of the ballot: an open U.S. Senate seat pitting Democrat Abdul El-Sayed against Republican Mike Rogers, and a governor's race to succeed term-limited Gretchen Whitmer, featuring Democrat Jocelyn Benson against Republican John James. Down-ballot contests include attorney general (Eli Savit vs. Doug Lloyd) and secretary of state (Garlin Gilchrist II vs. Anthony Forlini), plus two statewide proposals — one on calling a constitutional convention, another limiting corporate political contributions.

Detroit voters also pick five school board members, and Wayne and Oakland counties weigh a museum funding millage.

Barack Obama rallied Democrats in Cleveland, campaigning with Senate candidate Sherrod Brown and gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton days before the midterms. He condemned Republican gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy's ad featuring Acton's estranged mother, which attacks her over childhood abuse and homelessness, calling it a sign of declining political decency. Trump and JD Vance have defended the ad despite criticism from Ohio Republicans including Gov. Mike DeWine. Obama also faulted Trump for rising costs and White House renovations. He later campaigned in Detroit for Abdul El-Sayed against Mike Rogers, with Michigan's governor, attorney general, and secretary of state races also on the ballot. Obama is next slated to campaign in Georgia for Jon Ossoff and Keisha Lance Bottoms.
