Many Republicans facing tough November races are avoiding next week's GOP midterm convention in Dallas, the first held by a major party in over four decades. A POLITICO survey found roughly 45 of more than 70 GOP candidates and members contacted are skipping or undecided, citing scheduling conflicts, high attendance fees, and reluctance to appear alongside President Donald Trump, who is set to headline with Vice President JD Vance. Top leaders including Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune plan to attend, along with 2028 hopefuls like Sen. Ted Cruz.

Separately, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is weighing disciplinary action against Reps. Jared Golden and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez after the two Democrats helped Republicans pass a procedural rule, prompting a referral to the caucus's rules panel. Other pending items include a bipartisan bill policing lawmaker misconduct, a possible September floor vote on Russia sanctions legislation, and an unresolved GOP split over regulating data centers ahead of the midterms.

Oklahoma voters head to the polls in runoff elections deciding the Republican nomination for governor and the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, alongside two statewide ballot measures. State Attorney General Gentner Drummond and former state Sen. Most residents with an Oklahoma driver's license or state ID can register online through the Oklahoma Voter Portal, though address information must match state records exactly, including abbreviations and punctuation. Those whose ID address is outdated or who face portal mismatches must submit a paper registration form by mail or in person to a county election board or tag agency, postmarked or delivered by the deadline. Registered voters are also urged to confirm their registration status and polling location, since precincts can change between elections. Voters seeking an absentee mail-in ballot face a separate deadline of October 19 to submit their request through the same online portal.

A proposed aluminum smelter in Inola, Oklahoma, majority-owned by Emirates Global Aluminum, has become a central issue in the state's 2026 governor's race ahead of the Nov. 3 election. Republican candidate Mike Mazzei supports the project, citing projected job creation, nearly $1 billion in annual income, and national security benefits as the U.S. seeks to reduce reliance on Chinese aluminum production.
