Charlotte, North Carolina

The Justice Department announced indictments against 18 people in North Carolina for allegedly voting illegally in the 2024 election, bringing the state's total to 30 cases tied to that election cycle. Federal grand juries in Charlotte and Greensboro returned charges spanning all three of the state's federal districts, with defendants including lawful permanent residents from countries such as Nigeria, the Dominican Republic, France, Cuba, and Argentina accused of falsely claiming citizenship to register or vote. One defendant allegedly cast ballots dating back to 2000. The indictments arrive as the Trump administration intensifies voter fraud investigations ahead of the midterms, with charges carrying penalties up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines.

Charlotte voters will weigh in on Election Day, Nov. 3, on three separate bond measures totaling $425 million: $280 million for transportation improvements, $125 million for affordable housing, and $20 million for neighborhood projects. The bonds would be funded by investors and repaid by the city with interest, requiring voter approval since public funds service the debt. Mayor Robert Harrington said the borrowing lets the city accelerate projects rather than wait for cash reserves to build, citing Charlotte's top bond rating. He said the housing funds would support developers building affordable units and rent assistance, though he does not expect rents to drop. Harrington maintained the bonds will not require a tax increase.

Residents of Belmont, N.C. voiced anger at an Oct. 14 Noise Advisory Forum after hearing that new flight paths tied to Charlotte Douglas International Airport's runway expansion could route hundreds of daily flights over their community. Airport officials said no flight path decisions have been made and attributed the alarm to a miscommunication, with Communications Director Amanda Deweese apologizing for the confusion. Belmont Mayor Joe Jordan said residents had been told this was the venue to raise concerns about future changes, though committee members maintained the forum was intended as a routine quarterly discussion of noise and operations rather than a hearing on prospective route changes.

The airport is past the halfway mark on its new runway construction. Officials said environmental studies now underway will determine departure procedures, noise levels, and aircraft elevation data, with findings to appear in forthcoming reports. Once the FAA completes its review, additional public meetings are planned to address future flight patterns. Residents, including some from Steele Creek who described past disruption from increased air traffic, pressed for assurances about noise impacts and property values.

Florida executed James Robertson, 63, on Tuesday for the 2008 strangling of his cellmate, Frank Hart, at Charlotte Correctional Institution. Robertson pleaded guilty, waived all appeals, and told investigators he killed Hart specifically to secure a death sentence rather than remain in prison for life. He declined last words and was pronounced dead about 10 minutes after a three-drug lethal injection at Florida State Prison near Starke, in the state's first execution since a botched Tennessee execution two weeks earlier.

Gov. Ron DeSantis had been set to carry out a second execution the same day but withdrew the death warrant for William Lee Thompson without explanation, following a prior stay for psychiatric evaluation; Thompson, whose attorneys cite dementia and failing health, remains on death row. Robertson's execution was Florida's 17th of 2026, with William Reaves and Jesse Guardado scheduled next for Oct. 20 and Nov. 5, which would match the state's 2025 total. DeSantis oversaw a record 19 executions in 2025, and Florida has carried out more than half of the 31 executions nationwide so far this year, amid heightened scrutiny following Tennessee's failed lethal injection and a planned livestreamed firing squad execution of Nidal Hasan.

Early voting opens Oct. 15 and runs through Oct. 31 in North Carolina, a key battleground in the 2025 midterms. The marquee race is the open U.S. Senate seat left by retiring Republican Thom Tillis, pitting Democrat and former Gov. Roy Cooper against Republican Michael Whatley, the Trump-backed former RNC chair, with Green and Libertarian candidates also on the ballot. Democrats are targeting the seat as part of a broader push to flip the four seats needed for Senate control.

The ballot also includes competitive U.S. House races, including Charlotte-area districts held by Reps. Alma Adams, Tim Moore and Mark Harris, plus down-ballot contests for the N.C. Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, state legislature, and Mecklenburg County offices. Voters will also weigh in on constitutional amendments covering voter ID, income tax caps and property tax limits, along with Charlotte bond measures for transportation, housing and neighborhood improvements. Election Day is Nov. 3, with North Carolina's results seen as a bellwether for national party control in Washington.

Gas prices in Charlotte and across North Carolina are starting to drop after Governor Josh Stein signed a bill suspending the state's gas tax, cutting 41 cents per gallon from gas and diesel prices. The move responds to fuel price spikes tied to tensions following a U.S. attack on Iran, as officials cited the rising cost of living for North Carolinians.

The suspension runs through November 30 and could cost the state more than $350 million in revenue that would otherwise fund NCDOT road projects. Economists caution it may take up to two weeks for drivers to see the full effect at the pump, and savings may only amount to a few dollars a week for the average driver since gas stations aren't required to lower prices on fuel they've already paid taxes on. The N.C. Department of Revenue will audit tax filings but will not enforce pump prices. State lawmakers, including House Speaker Destin Hall, praised the measure as relief for drivers amid elevated fuel costs.
