Summit Carbon Solutions is scaling back its North Dakota carbon capture project, asking regulators to cancel permits for two of the three underground CO2 storage areas it had planned in the central part of the state. In a filing with the North Dakota Supreme Court, the Ames, Iowa-based company said it will not proceed with development at the "Summit #1" and "Summit #2" sites, and is asking that a pending appeal be narrowed to cover only the third site, "Summit #3," where it holds most of the necessary storage rights.

The move follows a district court ruling earlier this year that voided permits for all three storage areas; that decision is being appealed by Summit and the state. The pullback is being welcomed by landowners who had fought the project over liability and compensation terms. Summit had originally proposed piping CO2 from ethanol plants across five states to North Dakota for underground injection, but earlier this year shifted its primary storage plans to Wyoming, while saying its North Dakota pipeline easements and storage rights remain valuable for potential future use.

The Texas Supreme Court has refused to recognize a Pakistani talaq divorce judgment in a case involving more than $100 million in marital assets accumulated during a Houston-based marriage. The husband, a longtime Houston resident, sent his wife to Pakistan in 2012 under the pretext of renewing her visa, then unilaterally divorced her there in 2013 via talaq without her knowledge, providing notice only through a brief publication in a small local newspaper. She learned of the divorce two years later and filed for divorce in Harris County, but lower courts granted comity to the Pakistani judgment, leaving her without a share of the marital estate.

The state's high court reversed, holding that the notice was constitutionally inadequate and violated due process principles, since the husband offered no evidence that ordinary means of contacting his wife were unavailable. The ruling sends the property division dispute back for further proceedings and underscores limits on U.S. courts' deference to foreign divorce judgments obtained without proper notice.

Alaska voters headed to the polls Tuesday in primaries shaping contests for U.S. Senate, U.S. House, governor and the legislature, alongside a Florida primary seen as an early indicator for control of Congress. The marquee Alaska race pits Republican incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan against Democratic former Rep.
