Kansas's congressional delegation has asked President Trump to approve federal disaster assistance after severe storms struck Wyandotte County on Aug. 18, damaging dozens of homes and buildings and cutting power to more than 20,000 residents.
Senators Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran, along with Representatives Derek Schmidt and Sharice Davids, sent a joint letter noting that damage assessments by the state and FEMA found Kansas eligible for roughly $5.5 million in federal assistance. The lawmakers said the storm has strained local government finances as recovery continues, and that approval would let local governments and public utility providers seek reimbursement from FEMA for storm-related expenses.
