Arienne Childrey has resigned as vice chair of the Ohio Democratic Party's Pride Caucus, a position she held for two years, accusing party leadership of censoring the caucus and sidelining LGBTQ+ concerns. In her resignation letter, Childrey said the ODP treats the caucus as a "recruitment and sales team" meant to sell Democratic candidates to LGBTQ+ voters rather than represent their interests within the party, and claimed leadership has been reviewing caucus posts after blocking one addressing comments from gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton on transgender athletes in girls' sports.
The letter in question was later published by Ohio's two openly transgender elected officials, who said they were hurt by Acton's remarks but would still support her candidacy. Acton has said the issue is settled law and called it harmful for politics to pit people against each other.
The resignation reflects broader tension within the Democratic Party nationally over how aggressively to champion progressive causes, with a recent New York Times/Siena poll finding half of Ohio voters believe the party has moved too far left.
