New York's 22nd congressional district

Rep. David Valadao (R-Hanford) faces progressive Democrat Randy Villegas in California's 22nd Congressional District, one of the most closely watched House races in the country and a potential factor in the battle for control of Congress. Valadao has won the Central Valley swing district in six of the last seven elections despite a Democratic voter registration edge, but faces added pressure this cycle after Proposition 50 redistricting slightly increased the district's Democratic lean. He has also drawn criticism for his deciding vote on H.R. 1, a federal policy bill expected to strip healthcare coverage from millions, and for his ties to President Trump.

Villegas, a college professor and school board trustee backed by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, defeated moderate Democrat Jasmeet Bains in the primary. He rejects corporate PAC money and campaigns on Medicare for All and affordability issues. Valadao holds a larger overall fundraising and cash advantage, though Villegas has out-raised him in recent filing periods. Analysts are split, with Inside Elections rating the seat "tilt Republican" and Sabato's Crystal Ball calling it "leans Democratic."

A multi-agency investigation into prostitution and human trafficking at massage parlors in Columbia, Tennessee has revealed indirect links to both campaigns for the state's 5th Congressional District. On September 9, authorities executed search warrants at seven locations statewide, arresting 10 women as part of a probe involving the Columbia Police Department, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, ICE, and other agencies.

Neither congressional candidate was implicated directly in the raid, but records show a building housing one raided spa, Sunshine/Red Fruit Spa, is owned by an LLC in which Columbia Mayor and Democratic candidate Chaz Molder holds a 25% stake. Molder's campaign said he had no knowledge of illegal activity and no authority over tenants; the LLC evicted the operator after learning of the violations. Separately, a paid contract worker for Republican candidate Charlie Hatcher's campaign was reportedly present during the raid, though he has not been charged. The Hatcher campaign confirmed the worker resigned and criticized Molder's ownership stake as undercutting his anti-corruption platform.

A Giles County, Tennessee sheriff's deputy has been placed on administrative leave with pay after allegedly shooting and killing two small dogs while on duty. Sheriff Joe Purvis said he was alerted to the incident by a county commissioner and, after looking into it, requested an independent investigation by the 22nd Judicial District Attorney's Office.

The deputy, a nearly 30-year law enforcement veteran and the department's only animal control officer, had reportedly made repeated attempts over about a week to catch the dogs after a citizen complaint about animals running loose, with no owner willing to claim them. District Attorney Brent Cooper confirmed the matter is under investigation and said the deputy could face a class E felony, punishable by one to two years in jail, if wrongdoing is found. Sheriff Purvis said the office is committed to accountability and treating the case the same as it would for any member of the public.
