Montgomery County, Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, 53, a Montgomery County resident and former state attorney general, state representative, and county commissioner, detailed his record and positions as he seeks reelection. He supports maintaining abortion access and legalizing recreational cannabis, and has proposed legalizing and taxing skill games at 52%. Shapiro, once a data center booster, now says new facilities must meet strict guardrails requiring developers to generate their own power, protect air and water, and win local community support. He backs an "all of the above" energy strategy combining natural gas, solar, wind, and nuclear under his "Lightning Plan." He cites tax cuts and nearly 29,000 new jobs from his first term.

Montgomery County, Pennsylvania prosecutors have charged six people linked to an alleged criminal enterprise called "ARP" ("Always Running Plays"), accused of running kidnappings, robberies, extortion schemes and firearms trafficking across the Philadelphia area. The case began with a June 27, 2026 incident in which a man was lured to a Bala Cynwyd restaurant parking lot, abducted by men posing as law enforcement, and had more than $54,000 stolen from his accounts before being released. Investigators say the scheme dates back to at least 2024 and included another victim extorted for over $100,000, plus a separate incident involving threats with a rope and firearm.

Authorities also allege a straw-purchasing and gun-trafficking operation centered on Daquine Owens, a convicted felon barred from owning firearms, with weapons transported across state lines to Florida. Proceeds allegedly funded luxury trips, jewelry and rented vehicles, much of it documented on social media. Defendants Daquine Owens, Ajahnae Owens, Aysir Bond, Najwa Owens, Gregory Johnson and Keith Cirwithen-Howell face corrupt organizations, kidnapping, extortion and firearms charges; most are in custody, with Bond still at large.

Gov. Josh Shapiro and Republican challenger Stacy Garrity met Wednesday night in the only scheduled televised debate of the Pennsylvania governor's race, ahead of the Nov. 3 election. The hourlong forum, hosted by abc27 and moderated by anchor Dennis Owens, aired across several Nexstar-owned stations statewide and streamed online. Libertarian candidate Ken Krawchuk was not invited.

Shapiro, a popular incumbent and potential 2028 presidential contender, enters the race with a large fundraising and polling lead, touting first-term accomplishments including infrastructure repairs, business recruitment, and utility cost caps. Garrity, the state treasurer and Trump-endorsed Republican seeking to become Pennsylvania's first female governor, used the debate to raise her profile and press Shapiro on affordability, school choice, and his handling of a sexual harassment settlement involving a former aide. Both candidates have faced scrutiny over shifting positions on data center development, a contentious issue with bipartisan voter opposition. Shapiro's campaign has sought to tie Garrity closely to Trump, while she has pushed back on characterizations of her 2020 election comments. Analysts note debates rarely shift outcomes in races with such a wide polling gap.

A state-level technological error in Texas has created a massive backlog in voter registration processing ahead of the November election. According to the Texas Association of County Election Officials, applications and updates dating back to last October were not forwarded to county registrars until this week, leaving counties with anywhere from several hundred to tens of thousands of records to process. Montgomery County alone reported roughly 34,780 records awaiting review.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said the issue involved incomplete online records that never fully reached the Secretary of State's Office, and that the technical problem has since been fixed, though the exact cause has not been detailed. Counties now face a tight deadline, with registrations needing processing before early voting begins October 19. Officials say voters who submit registrations by October 5 should still be able to vote, and those missing from rolls on election day can cast provisional ballots. Election officials and political scientists are urging voters to verify their registration status directly.
