Imperial County, California

A scheduled court hearing for James Hill, accused of killing 34-year-old September Weisinger, was postponed in Imperial County, California, this week. Weisinger was found dead near Senator Wash on June 30, 2025, outside her trailer; investigators say she was burned alive, with smoke inhalation listed as the official cause of death. Hill was arrested at his Yuma, Arizona, home on September 3, 2025, and his trial has not yet begun.

Weisinger's mother, Irene Thompson, traveled from Kentucky to attend the hearing and was present for the delay. She visited a roadside memorial built by friends near the site. Hill is next due in court in Imperial County next month.

A printing vendor error caused nearly 7,800 voters in Tulare County to receive duplicate vote-by-mail ballots ahead of the Nov. 3 election, prompting confused calls to the registrar's office. ProVote Solutions, the county's longtime ballot printer, accepted responsibility and mailed correction notices instructing voters to destroy extra ballots. A similar mailing error affected 160 confidential voters in Imperial County. Officials say existing safeguards — barcode tracking, signature verification, and duplicate-vote flagging — prevent double counting. The incidents, in a competitive Central Valley congressional district, quickly drew conspiracy claims on social media amid heightened distrust of mail voting fueled by President Trump's unproven fraud allegations and his blocked effort to restrict mail-in ballots.

California's Proposition 45, a November ballot measure, would amend the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) to speed review for housing, water, transportation and other projects deemed essential. Supporters, including the California Building Industry Association, say it cuts costly delays and does not cover data centers. Opponents, including community groups and some land use attorneys, argue the measure's definition of "broadband internet access projects" is broad enough that data centers could qualify, weakening environmental scrutiny for a sector tied to pollution concerns and backup diesel generators.

The dispute is fueled by a real case: Imperial County's proposed Imperial Valley Data Center Campus, nearly one million square feet, which triggered a court-ordered environmental review after resident backlash and a county-imposed moratorium that was later rescinded under legal pressure. Legal experts are split on whether courts would ultimately classify data centers as covered. If they are, critics warn Prop 45 could block local moratoriums and limit courts' ability to halt CEQA-violating projects, fueling debate ahead of the vote.
