Kentucky’s 6th District House Race: Who Will Win?

Central Kentucky voters will finally see live televised debates in two closely watched congressional races, with Election Day on Nov. 3 fast approaching. On Oct. 19 at 7 p.m., Republican Sen. Andy Barr and Democratic challenger Charles Booker are scheduled to debate live on WKYT in Lexington for the U.S. Senate seat. Booker previously ran unsuccessfully for the Senate in 2020 and 2022.

On Oct. 22 at 7 p.m., candidates for Kentucky's 6th Congressional District, Republican Ralph Alvarado and Democrat Zach Dembo, will debate on WDKY/Fox 56, also in Lexington. Each debate will run one hour.

Until now, neither race had featured a televised debate this cycle. Barr and Alvarado both declined invitations to appear on the statewide public broadcaster KET, leaving Booker and Dembo to go on its "Kentucky Tonight" program alone. Barr had earlier criticized public broadcasting after skipping a KET forum during the spring primary, calling it a "left-wing outlet."

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer headlined the Kentucky Democratic Party's Forward Together Dinner in Lexington, calling Michigan and Kentucky "road maps of hope" and arguing Democratic governance in both states shows an alternative to what she described as chaotic Republican leadership in Washington. Whitmer, vice chair of the Democratic Governors Association alongside chair Gov. Andy Beshear, cited Medicaid protections, free school meals, pre-K, and tax cuts as evidence of Democratic wins in Michigan, while criticizing GOP-backed Medicaid and SNAP cuts, tariffs, and cost-of-living increases.

The sold-out dinner, the party's largest since 2012, also spotlighted Kentucky's May 2026 gubernatorial primary between Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman and former Beshear adviser Rocky Adkins, both of whom pledged to support whichever candidate wins. Beshear, often mentioned as a potential 2028 presidential contender, declined to endorse either candidate. Speakers including U.S. Senate nominee Charles Booker and congressional candidate Zach Dembo attacked Republicans over Trump-era policies, framing the dinner as a launch point for Kentucky's midterm elections.

An email from Andrew Bishop, an owner of Lexington's Ethereal Brewing, has drawn scrutiny over campaign finance rules after it circulated online ahead of a Sept. 23 fundraiser for Republican state Rep. Jason Petrie, chair of the Kentucky House budget committee. In the email, Bishop described an in-kind donation of food, beverages, and rental fees and asked recipients to reimburse the brewery via check, Venmo, or CashApp, writing that the arrangement would mean "no one will have to worry about campaign disclosures or names being associated with this donation."

Bishop later said the email was "poorly worded" and that the actual in-kind contribution totaled about $1,134, fully disclosed under the law. Ethereal Brewing issued a public apology, calling the event a candidate-sponsored fundraiser held at its venue, not a company event. The Republican Party of Kentucky said it did not host or know about the email. John Steffen of the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance said the described reimbursement scheme could violate laws barring corporate contributions and disguised in-kind donations if it occurred as written, though no investigation has been confirmed. Petrie has not commented.

U.S. News & World Report's 2026-27 Best High Schools rankings placed Fayette County Public Schools' Lafayette High School 9th in Kentucky and Henry Clay 13th, according to district officials and the publication. Nationally, Lafayette ranked 1,105 and Henry Clay 1,553. Officials cited Lafayette's 97 percent graduation rate and the nearly half of its students who took at least one Advanced Placement exam as contributing factors.

The rankings assess eligible public high schools at the national, state, and local levels using six performance indicators, including state-test achievement and college readiness, while also weighing curriculum breadth and how well schools serve all students. Within the broader Lexington metro area, Lafayette ranked first among local schools, followed by Henry Clay, Frederick Douglass, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Bryan Station, and Tates Creek.

Lexington voters in the 11th Council District, covering the Distillery District and Versailles Road corridor, choose between Richard Moloney and Cassandra Vogl in the Nov. 3 general election to replace retiring incumbent Jennifer Reynolds. Moloney, a longtime council veteran, and Vogl, a first-time candidate with a background in disability services and environmental advocacy, outlined contrasting positions on key local issues.

On data centers, Moloney backs a cautious, standards-first approach rather than outright incentives, while Vogl opposes the current small-scale data center proposal, citing strain on the electric grid, water and farmland. On Flock license-plate cameras, Moloney supports continuing the program with stronger oversight and audits, while Vogl opposes renewing the contract, citing surveillance and privacy concerns. Both candidates support expanding affordable housing, though they differ on mechanisms—Moloney emphasizes zoning reform and neighborhood preservation, while Vogl focuses on funding expansion, transparency tools and faith-based development partnerships. The race highlights broader local debates over growth, surveillance and housing policy playing out across Lexington-Fayette County.

Albany police arrested two city men, Mekhi R. Myrick, 23, and Sean A. Albea, 25, on Wednesday following investigations into multiple gun violence incidents. Authorities allege the pair fired at each other and at a group of people near Ontario and Second streets around 8 p.m. on Aug. 17, though it remains unclear who fired first. Myrick faces felony charges of attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Albea was charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment.

The arrests followed police raids across several Albany neighborhoods, where Myrick was taken into custody on additional weapons charges. Albea was arrested separately at a state parole office and also faces charges tied to an earlier incident on July 4, when he allegedly fired at an occupied building near Western Avenue and Quail Street. Both men were arraigned in Albany City Criminal Court and are being held at Albany County jail, with their next court appearance scheduled for Tuesday.
