Georgia Lieutenant Governor Race Won by McLaurin
PN Team • 12 hours ago
Democratic state Sen. Josh McLaurin defeated Republican state Sen. Greg Dolezal in Georgia's lieutenant governor race, with the Associated Press calling the contest Tuesday night. McLaurin took a majority of the statewide vote, becoming the first Democrat elected to the post since 2002 and flipping leadership of the Georgia State Senate.
McLaurin campaigned on Medicaid expansion, increased education funding, and local zoning control, while Dolezal ran on fiscal conservatism, pledging to eliminate municipal property taxes and limit corporate subsidies. McLaurin dominated urban and some rural counties like Bibb and Baldwin, while Dolezal led across much of rural south and north Georgia. As lieutenant governor, McLaurin will preside over the Senate and shape its legislative calendar.
