Suhas Subramanyam

Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, D-Va., became the latest lawmaker to report a suspicious white powder mailed to his Leesburg office, which was evacuated Monday as local hazmat teams and Capitol Police responded. He joins a growing list of officials targeted in recent weeks, including Reps. Seth Moulton and Eugene Vindman, and Sens. Adam Schiff, Pete Ricketts, Ted Cruz, and Mike Rounds. Moulton noted his letter carried a return address linked to the Democratic Socialists of America, which denies any involvement. The incidents began last week with letters sent to Louisiana's and Oklahoma's election offices. The FBI, Capitol Police, Senate Sergeant at Arms, and Postal Inspection Service are investigating the apparent coordinated intimidation campaign.

Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-Va.) became the latest lawmaker to report a suspicious white powder mailing, after his Leesburg office was evacuated and tested by Loudoun County Hazmat and Capitol Police. He joins dozens of lawmakers and election officials targeted in recent weeks, including Reps. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) and Eugene Vindman (D-Va.), and Sens. Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Mike Rounds (R-S.D.). Several letters bore a return address linked to the Democratic Socialists of America, which denies involvement. Louisiana's Secretary of State office found no harmful substances in a similar package. A federal investigation into the letters is reportedly underway.

Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-Va.) said the FBI and Justice Department notified him that his past phone calls with Virginia state Senate President Pro Tempore Louise Lucas (D) had been wiretapped. Subramanyam's office released letters, dated July and August, disclosing the surveillance, which a federal judge had authorized in April. In May, federal agents searched Lucas' office and a cannabis dispensary she co-owns as part of the same investigation. Lucas has denied wrongdoing and called the probe politically motivated.

Subramanyam called the timing "extremely suspicious," noting it coincided with Virginia Democrats' push for a redistricting referendum championed by Lucas, and with his own work on the House Oversight Committee pressing the DOJ over its handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation. He accused the Trump administration of trying to intimidate Democrats and vowed continued investigations into the administration. The DOJ and Lucas have not yet responded to requests for comment; the FBI declined to comment.

Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA) said the Justice Department and FBI informed him that his phone calls with Virginia state Sen. L. Louise Lucas were monitored as part of a corruption investigation into the longtime lawmaker. Subramanyam, who sits on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said the tap occurred between March and May, a period that overlapped with the Virginia redistricting referendum campaign and the committee's push for former Attorney General Pam Bondi to testify on the Epstein investigation. He accused Trump's DOJ of political retaliation against Democrats and said other figures in Virginia politics were also notified their phones had been tapped.

The FBI searched Lucas's Portsmouth office and a neighboring cannabis dispensary in May under court-approved warrants. The investigation reportedly began under the Biden administration, and the reason for the probe remains unclear. Lucas, president pro tempore of the Virginia Senate and chair of its Finance and Appropriations Committee, is one of the state's most powerful Democrats.
