New York's 6th congressional district

Gov. Gavin Newsom and the California Democratic Party are sending 134 election law attorneys, 1,000 voter protection volunteers, and 54 hotline operators to five congressional districts for the midterms, after the White House accused the state of allowing noncitizens to vote illegally. The move follows a federal judge blocking the Justice Department from forcing California to set aside 20,000 ballots it alleged were fraudulently cast. Newsom called the lawsuit a last-minute attempt to undermine Democratic midterm gains, predicting the party will easily retake the House. The targeted districts include several redrawn last year under a Newsom-backed redistricting initiative favoring Democrats.

The Cook Political Report has moved Kentucky's open 6th Congressional District race from "Leans Republican" to "toss up," reflecting a tightening contest between Republican Ralph Alvarado and Democrat Zach Dembo. The seat, held by GOP Rep. Andy Barr since 2012, is open as Barr runs for U.S. Senate. The University of Virginia's Center for Politics had also moved the race to "Leans Republican" earlier in October, while Sabato's Crystal Ball keeps that rating. Alvarado has President Trump's endorsement; Dembo has backing from Gov. Andy Beshear and growing DCCC support. The candidates debated once, on Oct. 22. Election Day is Nov. 3.
