Greensboro, Indiana police officer Enrique Contreras has been charged with felony official misconduct and misdemeanor intimidation following a September road rage incident in New Castle, Indiana. Contreras, who was off duty and driving his personal vehicle, allegedly swerved toward a car that passed him in a no-passing zone, then followed the driver and confronted them at a traffic light, showing his badge and threatening arrest without clearly identifying his agency. He denied the allegations and initially claimed to have dashcam footage before retracting that statement. The Henry County Prosecutor's Office reviewed the case and filed charges; Contreras's employment status with the Greensboro Police Department remains unclear.

More than 150 people attended an Indivisible Guilford County "No Kings" rally in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Saturday morning along West Market Street. The nonpartisan grassroots event marked the start of the state's early voting period, encouraging attendees to vote and to help others register or find polling locations. Organizers framed the gathering as both a day of community fellowship and civic action in support of democratic participation.

Early voting in North Carolina began Thursday and continues through October 31. The broader election calendar includes absentee ballots going out starting September 4, with Election Day set for November 3 and an absentee ballot return deadline of 7:30 p.m. that evening.

Early voting began in Guilford County, North Carolina, with turnout running ahead of the 2018 and 2022 midterms, according to local election officials. County Board of Elections Director Charlie Collicutt said hourly voter counts at the Greensboro courthouse exceeded those of four years ago, though they remain below presidential-year peaks of 200,000-220,000 early voters seen in past cycles.

Voters of varying ages turned out, including longtime participants and first-time voters from North Carolina A&T State University, who cited both national and local issues as motivating factors. The U.S. Senate race between Roy Cooper and Michael Whatley was among the high-profile contests drawing attention, alongside local concerns such as education funding and transportation. Wait times stayed short, generally under 20 minutes throughout the day. Early voting continues on weekdays and select weekend hours through October 31 ahead of the general election.

The Greensboro Police Department reported that 2,492 domestic violence victims have come forward since the start of the year, a figure shared as the city marks the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The total averages out to roughly 275 victims per month over the first nine months of 2025 and represents just under 1% of the city's total population.

Police pointed residents affected by domestic violence toward the Guilford County Family Justice Center and a dedicated hotline for support. National data cited alongside the local figures shows that an estimated 6.7 million women and 2.8 million men experience contact sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking from an intimate partner annually in the United States. Congress first designated October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 1989, a tradition Greensboro officials referenced in urging community support for survivors.

Greensboro city leaders and police are continuing to investigate a Sept. 20 shooting at nightclub The O that killed 38-year-old Marvin Watlington, wounded four others, and injured another person with broken glass. Police Chief Kamran Afzal said the shooting was not a random act of violence but an intentional incident between individuals who knew each other, and investigators are pursuing multiple leads generated both internally and through Crime Stoppers tips. Afzal declined to disclose suspect details or the number of people involved, citing the active investigation, though he acknowledged Greensboro has gang activity, as North Carolina's Alcohol Law Enforcement division had characterized the shooting as gang-related.

Mayor Marikay Abuzuaiter said the city is exploring ways to curb nightlife violence, including revisiting a previously proposed ordinance to hold event promoters more accountable. ALE has already suspended The O's ABC permits following initial findings. City officials praised ALE's cooperation in the joint investigation as it continues more than a week after the shooting.

Greensboro, North Carolina city leaders held a second work session on data center policy, hearing from state officials about permitting authority and regulatory boundaries. Mayor Marikay Abuzuaiter said no developer is currently seeking to build in the city, but officials want to be prepared with clear rules before that happens.

North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality official David Payne outlined the division of oversight: the state handles air and water quality reviews, while local government retains control over zoning, planning, building codes, noise ordinances and business recruitment. Council members have also visited Loudoun County, Virginia, to observe hyperscale data center operations firsthand. Abuzuaiter indicated she personally favors smaller "enterprise" facilities that require minimal ongoing water use over larger hyperscale projects, noting the state is also seeing a shift toward less water-intensive designs. A further work session on state policy frameworks is scheduled for October 8.

The North Carolina Cemetery Commission has issued a cease-and-desist letter to National Vault Services Inc., alleging the company is illegally operating Piedmont Memorial Park Cemetery in Greensboro without a required license under the state's Cemetery Act. The company has owned the cemetery since 2019 and was briefly dissolved for a filing issue before being reinstated in 2026. Google lists the cemetery as permanently closed, though recent burials have occurred there.

Families with loved ones buried at the site describe overgrown grass, misplaced grave markers, and years of neglect, with some saying they personally maintain the grounds around relatives' graves. Guilford County confirmed it found grass roughly three feet high but no solid waste violations, and noted it lacks an ordinance covering lawn maintenance. The company has 20 business days from September 10 to confirm it has halted operations or face referral to the state Department of Justice. Neither the cemetery's owner nor its listed gravedigger has responded to inquiries.
