Salina, Kansas

President Donald Trump is set to hold a rally this Saturday at Salina Regional Airport in Kansas in support of Republican Sen. Roger Marshall's reelection bid. Organizers expect roughly 10,000 attendees, with Air Force One landing directly at the airport near the rally site. Local officials say the event requires close coordination among the White House, Secret Service, military branches, and local law enforcement. Air1 Force One will taxi near the hangar, where Trump is scheduled to speak at noon, with overflow seating available outside. Community reaction is mixed, with some residents excited for the visit and others viewing it as a sign of political anxiety over the race.

Julie Shulsky, a former deputy chief and the highest-ranking woman in the Syracuse Police Department, has sued the city, Mayor Sharon Owens, former Chief Joseph Cecile, Chief Mark Rusin and First Deputy Chief Richard Trudell, alleging gender and disability discrimination, retaliation and wrongful termination.

Shulsky, who joined the department in 2006 and rose to deputy chief in 2022, alleges she was repeatedly excluded from decisions and meetings, spoken over by male colleagues, and denied a meaningful role overseeing her bureau. She says she developed PTSD after coordinating the department's response to the 2024 killings of two Salina officers, one of whom she had trained, and that the city delayed her medical clearance to return to work, partly to keep her from being considered for police chief. After a hostile-workplace complaint from a subordinate, she was placed on leave, questioned without representation, and terminated by certified letter in September 2026 — a decision she argues only the mayor had authority to make.

The city says it does not comment on personnel matters. Shulsky seeks reinstatement, back pay and damages; no specific dollar amount is named.

Salina, N.Y. voters will choose a new town supervisor after Democrat Raul Huerta, who unseated Nick Paro in a 2023 blue-wave win, opted not to seek re-election. The race pits Democrat Leesa Paul, a two-term town board member, against Republican David Stott, a former town councilor and county legislator making his first run as a Republican after decades as a Democrat. The town, with about 32,400 residents and a $20 million budget, has more registered Democrats than Republicans, though non-enrolled voters form a significant bloc.

Both candidates cite economic development, housing, and vacant commercial properties as priorities, while splitting on property reassessment, which Paul supports and Stott opposes. A key local issue is the ICE processing facility in Salina, which includes holding cells and has drawn repeated resident pressure at town board meetings over zoning authority and oversight; Paul favors waiting on legal review, while Stott considers it a lower priority than economic issues. Both support more housing amid demand tied to Micron Technology's planned arrival, though they diverge on data center development. Early voting begins Oct. 24, with Election Day Nov. 3.
