Jackson, Michigan Elections Flip State House Seat Despite County’s GOP Lean
PN Team • 3 hours ago
In Jackson County's Nov. 3 elections, Democrat Jan Maino unseated incumbent Republican Rep. Kathy Schmaltz in Michigan House District 46, helping Democrats flip control of the state House alongside their existing majorities in the Senate and governor's office. Derek Dobies returned as Jackson's mayor, defeating John Wilson, after previously holding the post from 2017 to 2021. In county judicial races, Judge Nicole Hughes won reelection and Jared Hopkins narrowly won an open District Court seat. Voters also approved a 911 surcharge increase and several local millages.
Despite the Democratic gains in Jackson city, the county overall stayed Republican, with John James, Mike Rogers and Tim Walberg all carrying Jackson County in their respective statewide and congressional races.
