Oklahoma authorities arrest a dozen in SNAP fraud investigation
PN Team • 2 months ago
Oklahoma Human Services (OKDHS) has uncovered a six-figure fraud scheme involving the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the state's food assistance program for low-income families. On Aug. 13, law enforcement conducted a multi-county warrant roundup across five counties, arresting a dozen individuals accused of exploiting the benefits program.
Two other individuals identified earlier in the investigation have already been sentenced and ordered to pay restitution. Combined, the suspects are accused of defrauding state safety-net programs of more than $150,000. OKDHS Director Jeffrey Cartmell said the agency has a responsibility to protect SNAP funding for families who rely on it. Investigators say they monitor agency records, financial disclosures, and public tips to detect deliberate misuse, and the agency's Office of Inspector General continues to accept fraud tips from the public via hotline and email.
