Cuyahoga County budget approach draws contrast with ADAMHS Board cuts
PN Team • 1 month ago
Cuyahoga County's Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services (ADAMHS) Board recently cut or eliminated funding for some longtime service providers, reshaping allocations based on community need and reducing duplication—for example, consolidating jail-diversion behavioral health services at the new Glick Recovery Center. Despite losing money, several affected providers have voiced support for the process, saying they understood the reasoning.
That response stands in contrast to reactions within county government itself. County Executive Chris Ronayne and Council President Dale Miller asked departments to identify across-the-board budget reductions of 3.3%, with deeper cuts sought from Health and Human Services agencies amid a projected deficit and an HHS levy renewal on the November ballot. Some officials, including Clerk of Courts Nailah Byrd, have pushed back or declined to comply. Commentators note the county has also flagged possible cuts to popular programs like Universal Pre-K, while critics question whether Ronayne's administration has sufficiently trimmed its own expanded executive operations before demanding sacrifices elsewhere.
