A national unity government, also called a government of national unity (GNU) or national union government, is a broad coalition government that includes all or most major political parties in a legislature. These governments usually form during a war, a state of emergency, or to preserve a country’s political stability. Operating on the principles of consensus democracy, a unity government typically lacks a formal opposition, or its opposition parties are too small to be meaningful.
