Hillsborough County weighs ban on kratom products amid fatality concerns
PN Team • 2 weeks ago
Hillsborough County, Florida, commissioners have scheduled a Nov. 10 public hearing on a draft ordinance to ban kratom products, following public testimony from grieving families and anti-drug advocates. Speakers described kratom's compound 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) as binding to the same receptors as heroin, warning of addiction and overdose risk. The county medical examiner's office attributed 11 deaths to kratom in 2025. The proposed ban targets 7-OH products specifically, excluding whole-leaf kratom intended for chewing or tea, though officials called it a "stepping stone" toward broader restrictions. A local smoke shop owner defended kratom as a responsibly used alternative to prescription painkillers.
