Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert Dies at 84

Dennis Hastert, the former Republican Speaker of the House from Illinois, has died at 84. Kendall County Coroner Jacquie Purcell confirmed he died at home over the weekend of natural causes.
Hastert served two decades in Congress and was the longest-serving Republican speaker in U.S. history before a dramatic fall from grace. In 2015 he pleaded guilty to violating federal banking laws by structuring large cash withdrawals, later revealed to be hush money paid to one of his sexual abuse victims from his years as a high school wrestling coach. At sentencing, U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin labeled him a "serial child molester." Hastert was never charged with sex crimes because the statutes of limitations had expired. He received 15 months in prison, a $250,000 fine, and mandatory participation in a sex offender program, serving 13 months before his 2017 release. He remains the highest-ranking elected U.S. official to have served a prison sentence.
