Providence Voters Approve Israel Divestment Ballot Measure
PN Team • 16 hours ago
Providence, Rhode Island voters approved Question 7, a ballot referendum requiring the city to divest from investments tied to Israel. The measure, backed by the group Providence for Palestine, directs the city to divest from "countries and companies profiting from genocide, apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and prolonged military occupation."
The ordinance divided city leaders: Mayor Brett Smiley opposed it, while state Rep. David Morales, who beat Smiley in September's Democratic mayoral primary, supported it. Republican mayoral nominee Dave Talan also opposed the measure. Its passage marks one of the more prominent local votes on Israel-related divestment in the U.S. this cycle.
