Houston must remove $1.3 million in park improvements after HISD ends Grimes Park lease
PN Team • 2 months ago
The City of Houston is removing roughly $1.3 million in taxpayer-funded improvements from Grimes Park after the Houston Independent School District terminated its lease with the city for the property. Tennis nets, basketball hoops, and lights have already been taken down, with swing sets expected to follow.
The lease, originally set to run through 2028, allowed either party to end the agreement with 60 days' written notice. It also required the city to remove any improvements within 60 days of termination or forfeit them to HISD, and made the city responsible for repairing damage caused during removal. HISD plans to use the land for a new career and technology center, with construction expected to start in March.
City council members Ed Pollard and Carolyn Evans-Shabazz criticized the arrangement, questioning why the city invested in land it didn't own under terms unfavorable to taxpayers. Mayor John Whitmire signaled support for reviewing similar leases to better protect public investment going forward.
