The Department of Veterans Affairs says it has opened 43 new healthcare clinics across 25 states and Guam since President Trump returned to office in January 2025, part of a broader push to expand veterans' access to care under Trump's May 2025 executive order targeting wait times and service delivery. The VA reports more than 300,000 new enrollees in VA healthcare this year, a record pace of direct-care and community-care appointments, and a reduced benefits claims backlog. Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old U.S. citizen jailed in Russia for more than four years on charges of fighting for Ukraine, has been released, U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed during talks with Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg. Hubbard, the last American formally designated wrongfully detained in Russia, was in poor health and expected to be flown to Texas for treatment. President Trump said he personally secured the release in a direct call with Putin, describing it as unconditional with no prisoner swap involved. The release came days after Trump eased sanctions on Russia, a move that drew bipartisan congressional backlash, with some states, including Colorado, publicly reaffirming solidarity with Ukraine.

Hubbard, a retired teacher and military veteran, was captured in Ukraine in 2022 and sentenced in 2024. His release follows those of Robert Gilman, Marc Fogel, Evan Gershkovich, and Paul Whelan. Roughly 10 Americans remain detained in Russia.

Following an Oct. 9 call between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the U.S. Treasury Department issued a license easing sanctions on Russian diesel through April 2027. A bipartisan group of senators called the move "a gift to our adversary," and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned it could embolden further Russian attacks. The decision appears to soften a Russia sanctions law Trump signed weeks earlier, though the administration frames it as a way to lower fuel prices.
